Mom, Thanks For Not Being My Best Friend

Mom, thank you for not being my best friend

Mom, thank you for never being my best friend. You don’t even know how tremendous a service you have done to me.

Mom, thank you for not being my best friend

Thanks to you, I’m the person I am now, and I don’t think you could have done things better. Forget those who say they want to be best friends with their children – they don’t know what a huge mistake they are making.

Mom needs to set boundaries. You are always looking for the best in me, even though I have not always agreed with you. Sometimes I thought you did things to annoy me, but now I know I was wrong –  everything you did, you did out of love.

You raised a strong daughter who knows how to take care of herself and who is very proud of her mother. And that is why I want to thank you now.

Thank you for your support in difficult times

When I was little, I didn’t have many friends. I was really shy, and others teased me. You were the first to say that I shouldn’t listen to mockers, and that they had no reason to laugh at me.

You said I was good and special, and that  people who make others feel bad are not worth noting. Thank you for all the nights you read me stories before going to bed. And you never forgot to tell me how much you loved me.

Your support was so great that one day I said you are my best friend. You replied that you couldn’t be my best friend, but you could be something much better: my mom. I didn’t understand this then, but you were right.

Thank you for all the moments when you said no, argued with me or rebuked me. Thank you, because with your strength I have learned from my mistakes. Thanks to you, I know how much the expensive phone I want costs and how much work it takes to get it.

Mom, thank you for not being my best friend

Thank you for all the lessons we spent in first aid. Thank you for enduring all the crashes, doctor visits, and scares I caused.  Thank you also for helping me during chickenpox and angina, and for using a small fortune for cough medicines.

Thank you for holding my hair while vomiting and for repeatedly repeating that I have nothing to worry about. Thank you for forcing me to take the vaccinations, because even if they happened,  they were in my best interest.

Thank you for being able to cry against your shoulder as I experienced my first disappointments in love. Thank you for teaching me to respect others and not to submit to and bow to the will of those who pretend to love me.

I often deserved a slap on the cheek, but you never gave it. You made me trust yourself and realize that there are things in the world that I can’t change.

Thank you for a good time

I appreciate our moments together. I share with you not only sorrows but also joys. You have always been my most precious thing. You taught me to get up and fight and celebrate my victories as if they were your own.

You trusted me without the slightest doubt. You have never doubted my courage, even though you know I am a person who makes mistakes. You have encouraged me to be independent, to live and make connections. You have never lied to me, and you have spared no constructive criticism. You don’t even know how much I appreciate this.

A mother is not a child's best friend

You, Mom, have always been right. You raised me and civilized me and let me go.  You did this with tears in your eyes, knowing that the next time you saw your daughter, she would be a woman.

However, don’t be sad. Without your sacrifices, I would not have gotten this far. You assured me that I was brave. Thank you again for your wisdom. If I’m a mother myself sometimes, I hope I can be as great a mother as you are. I love you mom.
