As we have already mentioned, carbohydrates are necessary for the well-being of both the adult and the child, but it is important to understand the differences between different carbohydrates. Namely, not all carbohydrates are good for humans when ingested in excessive amounts.

Carbohydrates are grouped into simple and complex according to the number of their sugar units.  Simple carbohydrates such as fructose, glucose and ribose are rapidly absorbed. Instead, more complex carbohydrates are absorbed more slowly by the body. Certain simple carbohydrates – such as fructose – raise blood sugar slowly, while some of the more complex carbohydrates – such as cereals, bread and pasta – raise blood sugar quickly.

Many parents wonder if there is any clear recommendation regarding the amount of carbohydrates in a child’s diet. However, the answer depends on the type of carbohydrate in question. Simple carbohydrates should not make up more than 10% of a child’s diet, while complex carbohydrates should make up at least half of a child’s daily calories. The key, then, is balance in the intake of different carbohydrates.

Rice chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 leek
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 zucchini
  • 5 cherry tomatoes
  • 60 g chicken breast
  • 0.3 dl of rice
  • Chicken broth
  • Add salt to taste

Manufacturing

  1. Wash, peel and chop the vegetables and chicken breast.
  2. Boil water and add vegetables and rice.
  3. After about 20 minutes, or when the vegetables have softened, add the chicken breast and wait until it is fully cooked.
  4. Pour the ingredients into a blender and add the chicken broth and a little salt.
  5. Stir well until smooth.
  6. Add salt if necessary.

Sweet potato and apple puree

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 large sweet potatoes
  • ½ apple
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Add salt to taste

Manufacturing

  1. Wash and slice the apple, but don’t peel it so you don’t lose the nutrients in the peel.
  2. Fry the apple for several minutes with the olive oil.
  3. Add two tablespoons of water and continue cooking.
  4. Once the apple has softened, crush it with a fork.
  5. Wash, peel and chop the sweet potato. Boil it in lightly salted water until it has softened and can be crushed.
  6. Combine crushed apple and sweet potato and mix well.
  7. Add a little salt and olive oil.

Whole grain rice puree

Ingredients

  • Just over 1 dl of whole grain rice
  • 1 small and ripe banana

Manufacturing

  1. Grind uncooked rice in a blender.
  2. Boil water and add 2 tablespoons or more of ground rice. Cook for several minutes.
  3. Crush the banana and mix it with the cooked rice powder. Mix well with a whisk.
  4. Add salt to taste.

These three carbohydrate-rich purees are delicious meals for your child and ensure you get the right kind of carbs. The basic ingredients in all are complex, slowly absorbed carbohydrates.
